Kubrat's Gold

This gold and emerald jewelry are an example of mid-7th century craftsmanship and were found in the Poltava Region of the Ukraine. They are most likely from a nomadic goldsmith's workshop considering these items are part of the Pereshchepina Treasure found in 1912. Furthermore, the style of the craftsmanship is a combination of ones used in classical Antiquity mixed with the polychrome style (a style characteristic of the Northern Black Sea area). The objects were intended to be worn by a Bulgar woman of high station (either a priestess or a noble (a boyl's wife or daughter) considering they were found with Khan Kubrat's holdings at Malaya Pereshchepina. The bracelets measuring at 7.4 to 7.9 cm in diameter have gone through the most wear and tear and once were set with many more precious stones. The torque with insets measures at 17.5 to 21.2 cm in diameter.
